Technical Questions

The first number is the size of each ply that makes up the yarn. The second number is how many plies the yarn has. So 3/2 is two plies of size three yarn and 5/2 is two plies of size five yarn. The bigger the number describing the size, the finer the yarn is.  Hence, 10/2 yarn is finer than 5/2 yarn.


A formal quality assurance programme, Q-Base, was implemented in 1998 and continues to this day. The Q-Base Code is based upon the ISO 9001 quality system standards. It requires the company to implement management disciplines to assure quality of products and services. We are independently audited annually by Telarc SAI, a Systems Certification Body by JAS-ANZ (Joint Accreditation System - Australia and New Zealand) and our performance against eight standards, including meeting customer needs, training, work instructions, continual improvements, are measured and tested. In the unlikely event there is a fault in the manufacturing of any part of an Ashford product purchased from an authorised Ashford dealer, we will replace that part if claimed within 12 months from the date of purchase.

The factory has been designed and equipped to ensure healthy working conditions for the thirty loyal, dedicated and enthusiastic staff. We have achieved a tertiary accreditation from ACC for our workplace safely management practices.

We purchase Silver Beech (Nothofagus Menziesii) hardwood green-sawn directly from the saw mills. This timber is sourced from sustainably-managed forests under the strict guidance of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). It has similar properties to America Maple and Cherry.

Wood is a natural, organic material with unique graining giving individual character. With the Silver Beech there is also differences in the heartwood (red or pink in colour) to the paler, silver sap wood. We air dry the timber naturally for about 12 months before carefully completing the drying process in our dehumidifier kiln. This ensures the timber is stable and stress-free. All timber will display movement from season to season because of changes in temperature and humidity, unless it is sealed. We recommend that you protect your Ashford product from these changes by sealing with lacquer, paint or wax and to reapply the protective coating periodically.Please avoid exposing your product to excessive heat, sunlight or moisture.A very small amount of New Zealand pine (Pinus Radiata) and Kadamu (Myristica chartacea Gillespie) plywood is also used.

Safe Handling Information

The wheel of the Kiwi 2, core of the Joy 2 and Kiwi 3 spinning wheels and core of some bobbin whorls are made from New Zealand manufactured MDF (Medium Density Fibre board). MDF is an engineered wood-based product made by bonding wood fibres with a synthetic resin adhesive. When first manufactured, the unsealed surfaces of these boards may release formaldehyde gas in concentrations up to approximately 0.5 ppm. (Up to 1.0 ppm is the current acceptable standard in New Zealand). In rare instances this may cause irritation if dust is inhaled or comes in contact with skin. We recommend wiping away any dust with a moist rag and then sealing the surfaces with a 3 coat application of polyurethane or paint.

Health Hazards

Swallowed: Unlikely to occur, but swallowing the dust would result in abdominal discomfort.

Eye: The dust, gas and vapour may be irritating to the eyes causing discomfort and redness.

Skin: The dust, gas and vapour may irritate the skin, resulting in itching and occasional red rash. Allergic contact dermatitis may occur.

Inhaled: The dust, gas and vapour may irritate the nose, throat and lungs, especially in people with upper respiratory tract or chest complaints. Asthma may occur.

First aid measures

Swallowed: Drink a glass of water.

Eye: Flush with flowing water for at least 15 minutes and if symptoms persist, seek immediate medical attention.

Skin: Wash with mild soap and running water.

Inhaled: Leave the dusty area.

All Ashford fleece, sliver and yarns are from New Zealand sheep. The wool is from sheep that have not been museled. It is processed in New Zealand.

Ashford sliver is a 100% New Zealand product with wool from pasture-fed Merino or Corriedale sheep. We know many of the farmers – some of whom have farmed the land for generations. They take great pride in the quality of their wool and the high standard of animal husbandry. The sheep are well cared for and are not museled.

After the sheep are shorn, on the farm, the wool is carefully skirted and checked. Only wool that is sound, clean with good fibre length, bulk and colour is selected. It is sent to our mill in Milton to be dyed, carded and combed.

It is scoured (washed) by a standard aqueous treatment at 60-70 degrees, using an environmentally-friendly detergent called 6 mole. This detergent is biodegradable and breaks down quickly in the water leaving no residue. The wool is then dried and dyed. The dyes comply with the strict EU regulations and garments made from the sliver can be certified under the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This standard is the most widely known standard for certification of ecologically-safe clothing. (Detailed information can be found at The fibre is then gently opened and conditioned. Carding machines align the fibres and remove any foreign matter. It is then gilled and combed.

Crafts are gentle, enjoyable activities that allow us to express ourselves creatively and practicably while engendering a sense of peace and well-being. You need to be aware, however, of safety and health precautions that need to be taken when using some of our products.


Ashford dyes, if used correctly, are non-hazardous to humans. They are weak acid dyes that are fixed with only common white vinegar and heat. Fibre, yarn and textiles dyed with the Ashford dyes can be worn against the skin without risk. We are in close co-operation with all our suppliers of dyes to ensure they are safe to use and wear. The dyes comply with the strict EU regulations and the manufacturers confirm that cloth dyed with the Ashford dyes can be certified under the Oeko-Tex Standard 100. This standard is the most widely known standard for certification of ecologically-safe clothing. Detailed information can be found under The dyes pose no risk the environment if the dye liquid is neutralised with baking soda before disposal in the waste water system. Full instructions for the safe use and disposal of the dyes are included with the dyes.

Safe Handling Information

Keep containers tightly closed and out of children’s reach.Wear gloves and cover your arms.Wear a dust mask when handling dry dye powder or spraying a dye solution.Keep dye pots and utensils for dyeing only.Avoid breathing fumes.Cover all surfaces.Ensure all dyes and solutions are labelled.Before you dispose of the dye bath liquid, add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda to the liquid to neutralise the acid in the water.

First Aid Measures

General Information: Take off immediately all contaminated clothing.

After inhalation: Upon inhalation of aerosol/vapour/dust, take the patient into the fresh air, if there is difficulty breathing, medical advice is required.

After contact with the skin: Cleansing with plenty of water, soap or other non-irritating cleansing agents.

After contact with eyes: Contamination of the eyes must be treated by thorough irrigation with water, with the eyelids held open. Eventually a doctor (or eye specialist) should be consulted.

After ingestion: If the product is swallowed, the patient must at once drink water repeatedly, if possible with the addition of activated carbon. If the patient feels unwell, seek medical advice.If medical attention is required take the dye and container with you.

Lacquered Products

Lacquer once applied to products has no significant signs or symptoms of any health hazard as a result of small ingestion.

PVA Glue

Safe Handling Information

No precaution for use although gloves and a mask are optional.

Health Hazard

Harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.

Swallowed: No significant signs or symptoms indicative of any health hazard are expected to occur as a result of small ingestion.

Swallowed: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water. Give plenty of water to drink. If you are concerned seek medical advice.

Eye: Flush eyes with copious amounts of water for up to 15 minutes. Retract eyelids frequently. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.

Skin: Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.

Inhaled: Not expected to present inhalation hazard under anticipated conditions of normal use.

Spinning Oil

Safe Handling Information

Avoid contact with the skin and eyes and avoid breathing vapours.

Health Hazard

Swallowed: may cause gastric irritation.

Skin: Mildly irritating to skin

Eye: May cause irritation.

Inhaled: Inhalation of the vapours (generated at elevated temperatures) can cause irritation to the nose and throat.

First Aid Measures

If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Seek medical advice.

Eye: Flood with water for at least 15 minutes, blinking as often as possible. If irritation persists, obtain medical attention.

Skin: Remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly. Wash with soap and water. Obtain medical attention for any persistent skin irritation or abnormality.

Inhaled: No treatment necessary under normal conditions of use.

Finishing Wax Polish

Of course the legal warranty provisions apply to all our products. We also offer a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty. Our products are delivered in good condition and should function properly with normal use. When you receive a product and this is not the case, please let us know. We will find a suitable solution as quick as possible, by replacement, repair or refund, depending on the article, the problem and your wishes.

We strive to support our products for life. This means that almost all spare parts of products that we no longer make are still available. Repairs of products after expiration of the warranty period are made at cost price.


In these general terms and conditions, the following terms are used in the following sense, unless the nature or purport of the clauses dictate otherwise.

  1. General terms and conditions: the present document General Terms and Conditions Consumers Louët BV.
  2. Louët: Louët BV, the user of these general terms and conditions, established at Kwinkweerd 139 in Lochem, the Netherlands, registered in the trade register under Chamber of Commerce number 66876338.
  3. Consumer: any natural person, not acting in the exercise of a profession or business, who has concluded or intends to conclude an agreement with Louët.
  4. Agreement: any agreement concluded between the consumer and Louët with which Louët has committed towards the consumer tot he sale and delivery of products and / or the performance of (assembly) work at a price that has been further agreed between the parties.
  5. Distance agreement: the agreement as referred to in the previous paragraph that has been concluded between Louët and the consumer within the framework of an organized system for distance selling without the simultaneous personal presence of Louët and the consumer and whereby, up to and including the conclusion of the agreement, use has been made exclusively of one or more means of distance communication, including the agreement concluded on the website through the Louët web shop.
  6. Work: all work to which Louët has committed itself towards the consumer in the context of the agreement, such as assembly work.

  9. Right of dissolution: the legal possibility offered to the consumer to dissolve the distance contract within 14 days after receipt of the products without giving reasons.


  1. These general terms and conditions apply to every offer from Louët and every agreement concluded.
  2. Destruction or invalidity of one or more of the present provisions does not affect the validity of the other clauses. In an appropriate case the parties are obliged to consult each other in order to make a replacement arrangement with regard to the affected clause. In doing so, the aim and scope of the original provision are taken into account as much as possible.


  1. Unless a period for acceptance is stated therein, any offer from Louët is without obligation.
  2. The consumer cannot derive any rights from an offer from Louët that contains a manifest error or mistake.
  3. In the context of a distance agreement, the images and product data displayed on the website offer a truthful representation and / or as complete and accurate description of the products offered. This data is sufficiently detailed to enable a proper assessment of the product range.
  4. Every agreement is established through offer and acceptance. For a distance contract, it applies that the consumer’s order is confirmed by Louët by e-mail and the consumer meets all the conditions stated in the offer. The order confirmation sent by e-mail by Louët is deemed to have been received by the consumer at the time that the order confirmation is sent by Louët. An error in the e-mail address provided by the consumer is at his risk.


  1. If Louët is dependent on information to be provided by the other party for the performance of the agreement, implementation and delivery / completion periods will not commence until Louët has received this information.
  2. Louët endeavours to comply with the execution and delivery deadlines agreed between the parties, but these deadlines are never strict deadlines. Louët’s default will not occur until after the consumer has notified Louët in writing that a reasonable period for compliance has been offered and Louët is still in default after the expiry of the latter period.


  1. The delivery of the products takes place, unless explicitly agreed otherwise, by delivery thereof to the delivery address specified by the consumer. In case no specific delivery address is specified, the billing address serves as the delivery address.
  2. Louët takes the greatest possible care when executing and delivering the order.
  3. Louët is only obliged to implement an order if the consumer has met the conditions stated in the offer.
  4. Louët reserves the right to have partial delivery of orders.
  5. The risk of loss and damage to the products is transferred to the consumer when the products have been received by or on behalf of the consumer.


  1. This article applies, without prejudice to the other provisions of these general terms and conditions, to the extent that Louët has committed itself towards the consumer to the performance of (assembly) activities in connection with product sales.
  2. The consumer must provide Louët with all information that is relevant to the design and execution of the work in a timely, correct and complete manner. Furthermore, the consumer must always provide Louët with all the cooperation required for the implementation of the agreement.
  3. The consumer must ensure the correct and timely execution of all establishments, facilities and other conditions that are necessary for the proper execution of the work. Furthermore, the consumer must ensure for his own account and risk that:
    • Louët gains access to the place of execution at the agreed time and can carry out the work during normal working hours. If Louët deems this necessary, the consumer must provide the opportunity to perform the work outside of normal working hours. Louët will notify this as soon as possible;
    • the access routes and designated place of execution are suitable for the supply or storage of the products and all other items required for the execution of the work.
  4. Louët must be able to make free use of all facilities reasonably necessary for the execution of the work at the location where the work is being carried out, such as electricity.
  5. If the consumer fails to fulfil his obligations as referred to in the preceding paragraphs, Louët is entitled, without prejudice to the other provisions of these general terms and conditions, to suspend the execution of the agreement and any delay / waiting hours and suffered. passing on damage to the consumer.
  6. When the work is delivered, the consumer is obliged to immediately check whether the work delivered meets the contract. If, in the opinion of the consumer, the delivered goods do not comply with the agreement, they must notify Louët of this immediately upon delivery, failing which it is assumed that the delivered goods comply with the agreement.


  1. Louët is not obliged to fulfill any obligation under the agreement if and insofar as it is hindered by a circumstance that cannot be imputed to it by virtue of the law, legal act or social opinion. Force majeure also includes the circumstance that Louët is unable to deliver products (on time) due to its suppliers.
  2. During the period of force majeure the obligations of parties from the agreement are suspended.
  3. If the performance of the agreement becomes permanently impossible due to force majeure, the parties are entitled to terminate the agreement with immediate effect.
  4. If, at the start of the force majeure situation, Louët has already partially fulfilled its obligations or can only partially meet its obligations, it is entitled to separately invoice the already executed part or executable part of the agreement as if it were an independent agreement.
  5. Damage as a result of force majeure, other than restitution and remission of the agreed price for that part of the agreement that is affected by force majeure, will never qualify for compensation.


  1. Subject to the other provisions of this article, the consumer may terminate the distance contract for 14 days after receipt of the products, or if orders are delivered in parts, after receipt of the last partial delivery, without giving reasons.
  2. The consumer who exercises the right of dissolution can dissolve the distance contract by submitting a request to Louët by e-mail or by using the model form for cancellation. As soon as possible after Louët has been informed of the intention of the consumer to terminate the distance agreement and if the conditions in this article are met, Louët will confirm the termination of the distance agreement by e-mail to the consumer.
  3. If the consumer exercises the right of dissolution, he must handle the product and the packaging with care during the period referred to in paragraph 1.
  4. If the consumer exercises the right of dissolution, he will return the product undamaged, with all accessories supplied and in its original condition and packaging to Louët.
  5. If the delivered goods have been subject to a value reduction due to the fact that the consumer has done more than was necessary to assess the nature, characteristics and possible operation of the products, Louët is entitled to charge this value reduction, whether or not by settle with the payments received from the consumer.
  6. Return of the products must take place within fourteen days after the dissolution of the remote agreement, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 2, has been confirmed by Louët.
  7. If the consumer makes use of the right of dissolution, the costs of returning the products will be borne by the consumer.
  8. Louët will refund the payments received from the consumer, less any depreciation, as soon as possible, but no later than within fourteen days after the dissolution of the distance contract, to the consumer, provided that the products have been received back by Louët or have been received by the consumer demonstrated that the products have actually been returned.


  1. Unless explicitly agreed otherwise, all stated product prices are exclusive of shipping costs. Before the agreement is concluded, the total price owed by the consumer is stated, including VAT and shipping costs.
  2. Payments must, unless explicitly agreed otherwise, be made in advance. In the case of prepayment, the consumer cannot assert any rights with regard to the implementation of the agreement as long as the prepayment has not been received by Louët. If the sale takes place at Louët’s location, payment must be made before or upon purchase of the products.
  3. If timely payment is not made, the default of the consumer will occur by operation of law. From the day that the default occurs, the consumer owes the statutory interest on the outstanding amount.
  4. All reasonable costs, both judicial, extrajudicial and execution costs, to obtain amounts owed by the consumer, are for his account.


  1. Complaints regarding the implementation of the agreement must be submitted to Louët by e-mail within a reasonable time after the consumer has found the defects, fully and clearly described.
  2. Complaints submitted to Louët will be answered within a period of fourteen days after receipt thereof. If a complaint requires a longer processing time, a reply will be sent within the period of fourteen days with an acknowledgment of receipt and an indication of when the consumer can expect a more detailed answer.


  1. Louët gives a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty on the products.
  2. A warranty provided by Louët, manufacturer or importer does not affect the mandatory legal rights and claims that consumers can assert against Louët.
  3. Without prejudice to the provisions of any explicitly stipulated warranty conditions, any warranty will lapse if a defect of the product is the result of an external cause or the rest cannot be attributed to Louët. This includes non-exhaustive, defects as a result of damage, incorrect or improper use, non-professional and regular maintenance or maintenance, making changes to the products – including repairs that have not been carried out with the prior permission of Louët.


  1. The fulfillment by Louët of the obligations under the guarantee are considered as general compensation. If, nevertheless, further liability of Louët exists, that liability is limited to what is stipulated in the present conditions.
  2. No liability of Louët exists if the damage was caused by a circumstance on the basis of which any stipulated guarantee has lapsed, and if the damage was caused by a circumstance that cannot otherwise be attributed to Louët.
  3. Louët is never liable for damage caused by the fact that it was based on incorrect or incomplete information provided by or on behalf of the consumer
  4. Louët has the right at all times to repair the damage suffered by the consumer for which Louët is liable. The consumer must give Louët the opportunity to do so, failing which any liability of Louët in this regard will lapse.
  5. If, on the basis of the circumstances of the case, a more extensive liability of Louët exists, that liability is limited to at most the invoice value of the agreement, or at least to that part of the agreement to which Louët’s liability relates, on the understanding that that the liability of Louët will never amount to more than the amount actually paid out in the case in question based on the liability insurance taken out by Louët, plus the possible deductible of Louët that applies under that insurance.
  6. The limitation period of all claims and defences against Louët is one year. Contrary to the previous sentence, claims and defences accruing to consumers, which are based on facts that would justify the claim that a consumer purchase does not comply with the agreement, expire after two years. The right to bring a claim or defence in connection with the existence of a defect of a product expires in respect of a consumer purchase after two months after the consumer has discovered the defect.
  7. The limitation in this article does not extend beyond what is permitted by virtue of article 7:24 paragraph 2 of the Dutch Civil Code.


  1. Dutch law applies exclusively to every agreement and all legal relationships resulting from it between parties.
  2. Parties will only appeal to the court after they have made the best effort to settle the dispute in mutual consultation.
  3. The text in these general terms and conditions is a translation from the original Dutch document Algemene Consumenten voorwaarden Louët BV. In case of unclarities the original Dutch text is binding.
